COURSE OF STUDY FOR LOCAL PASTORS
(alternative to enrolling in a Master of Divinity program at a seminary)
The Book of Discipline indicates that Full Time Local Pastors are expected to complete four courses per year in a Course of Study school or GBHEM approved correspondence school. Part Time Local Pastors are expected to complete two courses per year.
There are several approved Course of Study schools across the country. Most convenient for California/Nevada local pastors is Claremont School of Theology in Claremont, California. They offer classes in both English and Spanish. Claremont’s Course of Study classes typically are presented in June and July each summer. Licensing School for newly appointed local pastors is held in late July.
Application for Course of Study must be approved by both the District Superintendent and the Candidacy Registrar. First notice of the Course of Study schedule is usually available in February and application should be made as early as possible, especially if on-campus housing is desired.
The Board of Ordained Ministry makes financial aid grants available to local pastors attending Course of Study. The grants will cover a portion of the total cost. To be eligible for financial aid the local pastor must be currently under appointment or anticipated to be under appointment on the first of July. The application forms for financial aid typically will be mailed out the first of March and be due back to the BOOM registrar on the first of May. Late application should be avoided. It complicates the grant process considerably and can result in embarrassing situations at the Course of Study school.
